Patches for Smokers!

So the UK Government has decided to use public money to support those that want to stop smoking by supplying them with FREE nicotine patches – this at a time when they are increasing VAT, cutting back on their public spending (which seriously affects social care services, the emergency services, libraries etc.). Now I know that there is an argument that spending a “little” now will (possibly) save a “lot” in the future because the need to provide treatment for those suffering from smoking-related illness will reduce BUT I’d rather see MY money going towards paying for treatment of people that really need it.

If smokers choose to give up (and I support them with that), then surely THEY should fund their own treatment and divert the money that they were spending on cigarettes to buying their OWN patches.

At the end of the day, we all have choices – to smoke or not to smoke being just one, and we all have to live with the consequences of the choices that we make be they good or bad.
